The elegant class of its own all new 2016 BMW i8, i of the Beholder!

From the Outside (Part I)

What about a buttressed spaceship trimmed with extraterrestrial blue and black that drives attention from everyone, everywhere, all the time? Well this is the all new 2016 BMW i8 with its sort of awkward or unconventional ingress and egress that add to the charm of those spaceship looks. Only in mid-night when there is no light and the wheels are spat-covered, this all new 2016 BMW i8 can convince people that it is from this world else its out-of-this-world looks will make every person who catches a glimpse locks eyes on this competent cruiser of laser headlights—frickin’ LASERS, people!

External Features

The outside looks of this all new 2016 BMW i8 are apparently convincingly stunning, but this is not everything. This all new 2016 BMW i8 has a wheelbase of 110.2 in, length of 184.9 in, width of 76.5 in, height of 50.8 in, passenger volume of 81 cu ft, cargo volume of 5 cu ft and curb weight of 3484 lb. Bending in and under the dihedral doors of this all new 2016 BMW i8 is an event, every time. Before you fall into the car, you must first hoist yourself over the tall, wide side sills. The all new 2016 BMW i8 can see well, too. Its driver is a lucky enough to see clearly for this vehicle is equipped with laser headlights—yes, laser beams, but not quite literally, Dr. Evil. Lasers are used internally, but the pure-white light generated by laser-excited phosphorous is safe for oncoming motorists.

These high-beams worth $6300 that are optional on this all new 2016 BMW i8 are 1000 times more intense than LEDs. These new lights are even more energy-efficient than LEDs, but they are only for use as a supplemental high-beam that activates above 43 mph; the regular low-beams and the high-beams below 43 mph are LEDs. Although the U.S.-approved laser high-beams that are less blue and less powerful than those offered in Europe (where they’re also dynamic, dimming out an area when the car detects oncoming traffic), these all new 2016 BMW i8 laser high-beams still turn-night-into-day, once-having-a-prison-break bright and they operate exclusively at higher speeds.

Aside from the laser headlights, this all new 2016 BMW i8 has but one option, called Giga World. No, it isn’t a Glenn Quagmire–inspired salute to Seth McFarlane, it’s just a full-leather interior and the aforementioned LED headlights (projector beams are standard kit). For $2000 it seems well worth the investment. The next step up, Tera World, costs $4500 and includes frivolities such as a leather engine cover, but once you’ve signed up to spend this much money it may look like small change for a few more bragging points.

Engine Performance and Ability

Being so special as it is and one of a kind, this all new 2016 BMW i8 has three sources of power that allow it not to option on graceful entries and exits. With three pistons combusting internally, this all new 2016 BMW i8 harnesses under its hood a mid-mounted turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 12-valve 1.5-liter inline-3 engine and a stronger 129-hp, 184 lb-ft permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor up front that both provide this all new 2016 BMW i8 with a combined output of 228 hp, 236 lb-ft. The plus to this all new 2016 BMW i8 is a 7.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that raises the maximum system output of this all new 2016 BMW i8 to 357 hp, 420 lb-ft of torque.

This 357-hp hybrid power train drives all four wheels and with its front 2-speed automatic and mid 6-speed automatic with manual shifting mode can hit from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, 0 to 100 mph in 9.8 seconds, 0 to 130 mph in 17.7 seconds, 0 to 150 mph in 27.0 seconds and see 38 MPGe on a 200-mile test run.

This all new 2016 BMW i8 has a rolling start from 5 to 60 mph in 4.9 sec, a top gear from 50 to 70 mph in 3.0 sec, a ¼-mile standing of 12.5 sec at 113mph, a top speed of 156 mph, a braking from 70-0 mph with 163 ft and a road holding of 300-ft-diameter skid pad of 0.95 g.

Performance

With this all new 2016 BMW i8 being at last available in the market, you will get your first opportunity to meter the electricity going into the car so that to report an observed fuel-economy figure, which you’ve only been able to estimate in the past. Including all the charges, EPA city/highway driving estimates for this all new 2016 BMW i8 are 28 mpg in the city/29 mpg on the highway, with an averaged 33 MPGe and an observed highway range of 420 mi. While this may seem low for a three-cylinder hybrid vehicle, know that the EPA attached 28- and 29-mpg numbers to the i8’s conventional city and highway ratings, are achieved when the car is operating as a regular hybrid. Only when using the relatively small 7.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack alone, what the EPA calls “charge-depleting” mode, will the i8 approach its EPA electricity-plus-gasoline combined rating of 76 MPGe, and even then just for short stints. The all new 2016 BMW i8 averaged 38 MPGe on a 200-mile test run, 75-mph highway economy test, the first 16 miles of which were completed using only electric drive.

Driven without aggression, the all new 2016 BMW i8 can feel appliance-like, which we mean with no disrespect—few cars that perform this well are so amenable to gentle cruising. The i8 is capable of meandering through traffic like an ordinary family sedan, at least to the extent that those gaping at it allow. There’s great visibility outward, considering how low the car is, so maneuvering around the gawkers is easy. The narrow Bridgestone Potenza S001 tires, 215/45R-20 in front and 245/40R-20 in back, don’t hum on the freeway the way the wide meats do on, say, a Chevy Corvette. The all new 2016 BMW i8 generates 72 decibels of noise at 70 mph—not luxury-sedan quiet but 4 decibels quieter than what we measured in the Corvette Grand Sport. Four decibels might seem like a small difference, but sound measurements reside on an exponential scale, and the BMW’s cruising sound is not only much quieter but of a more pleasant character.

Whatever juggling act is happening behind the scenes, the interplay between the all of the motors and wheels in this all new 2016 BMW i8 is nearly seamless. You can’t do a burnout, but in Sport mode the all new 2016 BMW i8 has enough of a rear bias that you can kick the tail out a little in turns, just like a proper sports car should.
Fortunately, this all new 2016 BMW i8 always holds enough charge in the battery so that full power is available when you step on the accelerator, and it replenishes it when you hit the brakes or are just cruising along with the engine running. Today’s Formula One and Le Mans prototype racers work in very much the same way.

Conclusion

It is always the case with many luxury automakers where a low base price escalates very quickly as you add options and this all new 2016 BMW i8 is but an example. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that you could actually buy an all new 2016 BMW i8 for anything close to $137,450. BMW planned to send only 500 of them to the United States each year, but demand was so strong that it doubled that allocation. It still isn’t enough. The want for these is so strong that you’re lucky to find one listed today for less than $175,000. Some are on sale for as much as $250,000, but one can’t confirm that anyone has actually paid that much.

Nobody knows how many people still want the world’s best-handling ute, one that is not any faster than the previous version with which it shares most of its features but with a plus to soothe those demanding fans and costs almost $141,695 as a base price that could mount to $151,795 and even more. But you might be one of them, desperately wanting this all new 2016 BMW i8
Driving this all new 2016 BMW i8 is a scintillating experience; the expansive hood and the bellow of the barely tamed V-12 with its additives give new meaning to the term "grand touring," with this all new 2016 BMW i8 seems to be a fitting tribute. After stating all these features, cost-cutting probably isn’t your highest priority if you’re in the market for this all new 2016 BMW i8, while pricing here remains undisclosed, but figure on paying roughly $151,795 with a base price of $141,695 for this 357-hp hybrid power train as a starting price.
